The number of older Americans is growing and their longevity has increased. People age 60 and older are now the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population. This trend is not a temporary result of the aging of the baby boom generation, but a permanent and unprecedented shift in the demographic structure of our society. The increase in longevity has not resulted in an increase in the number of years of disability or poor health, but in an increase in the number of productive years of life.
